Meghalaya Fire & Emergency Services (MF&ES) came into existence in the year 1972 after the state was bifurcated from Assam. At the initial stage there was only 2 (two) Fire Stations functioning, 1 (one) each at Tura and Shillong respectively with a handful of staff and few vehicles and appliances, but now Meghalaya Fire & Emergency Services is functioning with 5 (five) Fire Stations and 29 (twenty-nine) Sub-Fire Stations in the state manned by 876 (eight hundred seventy-six) personnel in various ranks. The Meghalaya Fire & Emergency Services is under the Police Administration headed by the Director General of Police, Meghalaya. Rank and Badges of MF&ES personnel are same as Police personnel.

Apart from this, various fire fighting equipments and appliances have been procured and today the Meghalaya Fire & Emergency Services is having a fleet of 109 (one hundred nine) numbers of fire fighting vehicles manning 5 (five) Fire Stations and 29 (twenty-nine) Sub-Fire Stations in the state.
The Services of Meghalaya Fire Services has now been extended to search and rescue and evacuation apart from fire fighting. Thus the Government of Meghalaya is pleased to declare MEGHALAYA FIRE SERVICES as MEGHALAYA FIRE & EMERGENCY SERVICES since April-2005.
Training : Apart from training the personnel in Drill and Discipline in the state, Fire & Emergency Services personnel are also deputed for professional and technical courses at the National Fire Services College, Nagpur as well as Regional Training Institutes in the country which are affiliated to National Fire Services College, Nagpur and Nagpur University. The courses attended by the Fire & Emergency Services personnel are :
1. Sub-Officer Course
2. Station Officer and Instructors
Course
3. Divisional Officers Course and
4. Other capsule courses.
Apart from the above, Eire & Emergency Services personnel have undergone specialize courses on Disaster Management at the NISA, Hyderabad.
Special Rescue Team : In order to meet other e emergencies apart from fire fighting, such as. flash flood, land slides and natural or man made disasters, drowning, etc few sophisticated fire fighting equipments have been procured. These sophisticated equipment are handled by a specialized team known as Special Rescue Team. This Special Rescue Team has been formed by the Police Headquarter with a view to tackle emergency calls other than fire fighting.
